An important document published by the DMG in 1935 is the Denkschrift zur Transliteration der arabischen Schrift. It set scientific standards in that each Arabic character corresponds to only one Latin letter, and the transliteration is so unambiguous that it can be correctly translated back into the original script. Most other scientific transliteration systems used for Arabic scripts do not meet this requirement. In German-speaking countries, this set of rules still forms the basis for the scientific transliteration of Arabic and, with some modifications, also of Persian and other Semitic languages. A pdf of this document can be found here.
