This history has been shaped, among other things, by changes in how philology understands itself as a discipline, by heated debates about the concept of the \\u201cOrient\\u201d and the field of Oriental Studies, and by the emergence of area studies institutes and interdisciplinary research projects. Not least, it has been shaped by political and social developments in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, the \\u201cArab Spring\\u201d and forced migration. Against this background, we, a group of Arabists, founded the Section for Arabic Studies within the German Oriental Society (Deutsche Morgenl\\u00e4ndische Gesellschaft, DMG), in order to explore together with colleagues what Arabic Studies is today and what it could become in the future.<\/p><p dir=\\\"ltr\\\">Our aim is therefore not to fix a normative position, but to develop a range of perspectives that show our scholarly practice in all its diversity and in its capacity to connect with other fields. As linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies and language pedagogy, Arabic Studies is to gain clearer contours and greater visibility, both within the discipline and beyond. In this way, the potential of Arabic Studies can come to bear more fully in cooperation with related Middle Eastern disciplines such as Islamic Studies, Semitic Studies and Eastern Christian Studies.
